Cost

The cost of full treatment for Thalassaemia is very high. We are fortunate that in Malaysia the patients do not have to pay for blood transfusion. However, desferal, the iron-removing drug is very expensive. The current desferal cost is RM13.40 per vial. On average, a patient requires 2 vials per night. The Society is currently subsidizing about 80% of the cost desferal and the blood filters used during transfusion. Additionally, we also provide the battery operated pumps to the patients at RM100 each. The cost of the pump is RM2300 each.
